Where Should Hertfordshire's Waste Go?

Hertfordshire County Council have today, (Monday 8th November), issued a call to residents asking for their views on proposed plans for how to deal with waste management in the future.

As the Waste Planning Authority for Hertfordshire, the county council is required to prepare land-use planning documents which take into consideration the views and ideas of those who may be affected by the ways in which waste could be treated.

Derrick Ashley, Executive Member for Waste, explained: "We already have a Waste Plan for the county, but this is now out of date and needs to be reviewed. The new plan, which will cover the period 2011-2026, will set out the county council’s policies and proposals for the future annual treatment of three million tonnes of waste. This includes identifying areas that may have the potential to accommodate waste facilities as well as safeguarding existing facilities."

The county council is consulting on the Core Strategy and Development Management Policies Document which sets out the overall vision and objectives for waste planning in the county. It also identifies broad locations where strategic waste facilities will be needed. Following this consultation, the document will be submitted to the Secretary of State for examination.

The county council is also taking this opportunity to seek views on the Waste Site Omissions Document. This document shows areas of land which may be suitable for waste uses that have either not been put forward in the past or are being re-promoted. Responses to this informal consultation stage will help to shape the future Waste Site Allocations document.

The consultation on these documents started last week and will run until December 13, 2010.

Derrick added: "We welcome feedback on both documents from residents and anyone who has an interest in Hertfordshire's waste. This is your chance to have your say on how we plan for the future treatment of our waste."
